Originally designed for commercial sales by Webley and Scott. It was offered to the British government in the 1930's as a potential replacement for the larger .455 caliber revolver. Rejected during trials, it was placed in production as a substitute to remedy the shortage of revolvers at the beginning of the war. Later officially adopted, it remained in military service until its replacement by the Browning HP-35 pistol in the early 1960's. Webleys were also issued for police use in the Commonwealth in the 1930's, and after the war, remaining in service until their replacement in the 1970's.  6 rd. shot.
